Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu

Machu Picchu or Machu Pikchu (machu old, pikehes pyramid or mountain that has an extensive base and at the top has sharp peaks,) this “Old Peak” stands as a great historical site called as ‘Inca’ site. The height of this old peak is 2,430m (7970 ft). It is situated in Urubamba province in Peru.  Machu Picchu lies on a mountain hill top that is on the top of holy valley and is 80km northwest of Cusco region from where a river known as ‘Urubamba’ flows. It is the world’s most well recognized tourist attraction and archaeological site in South America as well as in Peru.

History: Archaeologists think that Machu Picchu represent the ‘Inca’ civilization , the emperor of this civilization was Pachacuti (1438-1472)

The Incas built the state around 1450, and abandoned it after Spanish conquest a century later. Various historians have presented theories about the history of Machu Picchu.

An American historian Hiram Bigham suggests that the complex was the traditional birth place Incan ‘Virgins of Suns’. Most recent researches by scholars such as John Howland Rowe and Richard Burger have convinced archaeologists that Machu Picchu was an estate of Inca Emperor Pachacuti. In addition, John Reinhard presented evidence for Machu Picchu to be a religious site. The site received significant publicity after the National Geographic society devoted their efforts in April 1973 to Machu Picchu.

Geography:-

Machu Picchu lies in the Southern Hemisphere 13.14 degrees south of the equator. It is situated above the loop of Urubamba River which surrounds the site. The deep precipices and steep mountains provided excellent natural defenses in the past. The Inca Bridge across Urubamba River provided a secret entrance for Inca Army.

This site has water availability which comes from spring and a land enough to live and grow food as well for the people who lived there.  The hill sides that lead to the site have terraces which are beneficial to reduce erosion of soil and also help protect against landslides.

Distribution according to the habilitation factors:

The Machu Pichu area is basically distributed among two sectors, the agricultural and residential or urban sectors. These two sectors are called the upper town and lower town. The temples of the site are located on the upper town and ware houses are located on the lower town. This distribution is based on the natural form of the mountain graduation as well.  The city has two sectors, eastern and western. The Eastern part is devoted specifically for the religious purposes while the western part is devoted to residential purposes.

Inthihuatana, also known as the Temple of the Sun and Room of three windows is located in the upper town. It is a fundamental archaeological treasure. This temple was prepared to dedicate it to the Mighty Divinity and Sun God named “Inti”.

The lower town is specifically allocated for population as residential area. This area has houses, markets, and storage buildings. The royalty is allocated as the sector for the nobleness. The royalty area is structured in rows over the slop of mountain.  The houses of this area have reddish walls that are specifically symbolized for the residence of wise persons, the Amantas.

Intihuatana stone:-

Intihuatana stone is one of many ceremonial stones in South America. The Inca believed that the stone held the sun in its place along its annual path in the sky. At mid day on the 11th  of November and 30th  of January, the stone stands nearly over the pillar casting no shade.

Construction:-

The central buildings of Machu Picchu used the classical Inca architectural style of polished dry stone walls. Peru is a highly seismic land thus mortar free construction makes it earthquake resistant. Inca walls had numerous design details that helped protect them against collapsing in an earthquake. Doors and windows are tilt inward from top to bottom and trapezoidal.

Roads and transportation:-

As part of their road system, Incas built a road to a Machu Picchu region. Today, A large number of tourists walk the Inca Trail to visit Machu Picchu each year.

Concerns over Tourism:-

Machu Picchu is a world inheritance site of UNESCO, since its discovery, a growing number of tourists visit the Machu Picchu. Peru as a foremost revenue producer is frequently exposed by fiscal and profitable threats. In the late 1990, the Peruvian government approved discounts to permit construction of cable car and expansion of luxury hotels, including tourist restaurants. Many people protested against the plan as they were concerned that the larger number of visitors will pose a tremendous physical burden on the ruins.

Machu Picchu is considered a historical landmark with a staggering natural exquisiteness. In 2007, Machu Picchu was voted as one of the new Seven Wonders of the World in a worldwide internet Poll.

Florida Keys

Florida Keys

Florida Keys are the coral cay group of islands situated in southeast of United States of America and are considered the extension of Florida peninsula. The term ‘Key’ comes from Spanish word ‘Cayo’ which means “little island”. The only living coral reef in the continental United States can be found on The Florida Keys. There are more than 800 keys, spreading across 290 km. At the southern end of Florida, there are towns of Homestead and Florida City; they are called the Gateway to the Keys. Only 43 keys are connected via bridges. The longest bridge is a Seven Mile Bridge. With the numerous islands in Florida Keys, they are divided into four groups. Each group is unique in history, culture and activities. Tourism and fishing are the main industries of these islands. The attractions of Florida Keys are the beaches, historical landmarks, museums, dining experience and art galleries. The four groups are:

The Upper Keys

The Upper Keys are the islands located at the farthest north and closest to Florida’s mainland. The Upper Florida Keys are well-known for the two things:

  • Scuba Diving
  • Sport Fishing

The Upper Keys have the most charter fishing boats as waters around carry good variety of fish. Key Largo an island present in Upper keys has been called the “Diving Capital of the World”. Off the city of Key Largo, there are some of the best sites for diving in the Florida Keys.  Divers and snorkelers can expect to see manta rays, spotted eagle rays, eels, turtles, reef sharks, tarpon, sting rays, large lobsters and tropical fish on diving. For nature lovers, Key Largo is a premier destination for kayakers, birders and other eco-tourists.

Another Upper key Islamorada has been named the “Sport Fishing Capital of the World”. It known as the Purple Island and was chosen to be one of the best places to live on in the world through people’s votes.

The Middle Keys

The Middle Florida Keys is made of many Keys starting with Long Key, the Conch Keys, Duck Key, Grassy Key, Boot Key, Crawl Key, Pigeon Key and Key Vaca. Long Key is a beautiful island known for parks, fishing spots, kayak, restaurants and beaches.

Key Vaca is an island present in Florida City, Marathon. Marathon is known for sport fishing and scuba diving. A rise in ocean bottom called hump also exists in Marathon city. Marathon Hump is known for fishing sports and catching game fish like Tuna, Blue Marlin, White Marlin, Sharks, Sailfish, Blackfin, Dolphin and huge Amberjack.

The Lower Keys

Lower Keys can be considered left over large fossilized coral reefs exposed as sea level declined. They have beautiful white sandy beaches and abundant wildlife. It is considered an excellent vacation spot. One of the Lower Keys is Key West which is known for its colorful locals. Key West has the longest street in the world as it runs from coast to coast. Visitors can take a ride on Conch Tour Train and get a close view of the beautiful Island. The Lower Keys are mostly underdeveloped, lacking any business except Big Pine Key. Deer and other wildlife protection have been set by National Key Deer Refuge in Big Pine Key. There is a unique island called ‘No Name Key’ on which life is very primitive and self-sufficient. A road connects Big Pine Key with No Name Key. Little away from Big Pine Key is a resort island called Little Palm where celebrities go for vacation. The resort is accessible only by boat.

Just like Upper and Middle Keys, Lower Keys also offer great snorkeling, scuba diving and sport fishing. It’s particularly known for its easy, relatively shallow dives with copious coral and fish.

The Outlying Islands

Sunset Key, Wisteria Island, the Marquesas Keys and the Dry Tortugas are part of the outlying islands. The Outer Keys have no bridge, and islands are accessible only by boat.

Importance of Florida Keys

The ecosystems of the Keys are home to several endangered species. If we managed to protect the Keys, this means we can help establish a better future for these animals and plants living there. The more people are educated about Florida Keys wildlife and ecology, the more danger free future we will be heading to.

Beach of Florida Keys

The famous beaches of Florida Keys are:

  •  Veteran’s Beach
  • Bahia Honda Sandspur
  • Bahia Honda Oceanside
  • Bahia Honda Bayside
  • Sombrero Beach
  • Coco Plum Beach
  • Curry Hammock

Climate of Florida Keys

The climate of the Florida Keys is tropical, just like the southern part of Florida. However, because of the islands’ location between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gulf of Mexico, they are prone to hurricanes. The islands have very low elevations and flooding from the storm’s surges which can easily affect large areas of the Keys. As a result threats of flooding, evacuation orders are always put into place when hurricanes threatens to take over the area.

Grand Canyon Skywalk

Grand Canyon Skywalk

Grand Canyon Skywalk  is an extraordinary horseshoe-shaped ‘Glass Bridge’ which is located a mile over the beautiful Colorado River. This glass walkway reaches 70 feet from the edge of the Grand Canyon and provides an interesting vertical view down the rim of the canyon. The Grand Canyon Skywalk  is located about 120 miles east of Las Vegas, in Nevada. The glass bridge was built by a certain Hualapai Tribe which aimed to provide a different and unique Grand Canyon experience. The structure became a huge hit, and people came from far and wide to visit it. The inauguration of the Grand Canyon Skywalk took place on the 20th of March, 2007. Among the first people to ever step on this one-of-a-kind structure was Buzz Aldrin.

Grand Canyon and Safety:

Most people often wonder how safe is the Skywalk. The Glass Bride is nearly more than three times higher than the famous Empire State Building. Over one million pounds of steel was used to build this amazing structure! That means that the building can easily stand the weight of 71 fully loaded Boeing 747 planes, which estimates to be around over 71 million pounds. Not only the weight, but the Skywalk can also easily withstand winds blowing at 100 miles per hour, from eight different directions.

When the Grand Canyon Skywalk was being built, the engineers spook special steps which would help them in dealing with earthquake emergencies. The structure is built in such a manner that it can stand an earthquake of up to 8.0 on the Richter scale. That is a pretty strong earthquake and can easily bring down buildings, but the Skywalk can get through it.

The Controversy of Grand Canyon Skywalk:

The Grand Canyon Skywalk has a bit of controversy surrounding it, as well. There are people who speak against it while some speak for it.  Those who are against it are concerned that this famous tourist attraction is nothing but an eye sore. Conservationists are of the opinion that the Skywalk is not good for one of the greatest natural wonders, as the Skywalk is turning the Grand Canyon into a commercial tourist attraction. Some people also believe that the Skywalk is lowering the historical, as well as cultural, values of the Grand Canyon and the Hualapai Tribe. Then there are people who raise an issue over the fact that since the Hualapai tribe has very limited infrastructure, how they would be able to support the resorts, currently, there is no telephone or electrical service in the area, no sewer system etc. Managing the resorts and attractions under such circumstances would become extremely difficult.

However, those who are in favor of the Grand Canyon Skywalk, believe that the Glass Bridge is simply a unique tourist spot, which offers something, which no other place in the world does. They also believe that since this Glass Bridge is one of its kind in the whole world and people from all over come to visit it, so this can be an effective mean for the Hualapai tribe to make more money. They also feel the new Grand Canyon West development will prove to be beneficial for the local economy.

The 6,000 square-foot development which comprises the Glass Bridge is called the Grand Canyon West. It includes a gift shop, a visitor’s center and even a nice restaurant. The Hualapai Tribe has further plans for extending their project and including other things like hotels and shopping centers. Setting up movie theatres and VIP lounges are also part of the plan. They also plan on building a golf course close to the Glass Bridge. Their biggest plan comprises to include cable cars as a mean of transportation, which the tourists could use to travel from the canyon rim to the Colorado River.

Cost of Tickets:

The tickets to the Skywalk are available at pretty affordable prices. Adults are charged $29.95, whereas children of 3-11 years are charged $22.46. Those belonging to the Senior group or to the Military are charged $26.96, only. The tickets are not that expensive considering you can see experience the Grand Canyon from an angle, like never before. You may also stay on the bridge as long as you want.

The Grand Canyon Skywalk is definitely the first of its kind, and people from far and wide visit it. It is indeed one of the most popular tourist attractions. You may be allowed to stay on the bridge for as long as you want, but you cannot take pictures of it, with your own personal camera. They have their own stationary cameras which can take pictures for you, which you can later pick up from the gift shop. All in all, it is definitely worth visiting.
